Ever heard of Dead Drops? Apparently it comes from the old spy days where a meet would be arranged, and one agent would spike a message into the ground at a chosen location and time….thanks Cathal for that one. Well, being the 21st century there is a new take on it now….USB deaddrops.
Basically a movement that started in New York is slowly spreading accross the world, a real world peer-to-peer sharing network, outside of the ever pervasive tendrils of Google. Now, I’m not big on the Big brother conspiracy theories, but its a good example of people power existing outside of the mainstream, for whatever reason.
gyg.ie exists to pay people, business and fundraisers for their old mobile phones, laptops, ink cartridges, games consoles, iPods, iPads and in fact most electronic items, because we know there’s value in them, and we believe that extending the life of the things we have bought can only be a good thing. So, we like it this idea because:
(a) Its a great use of old USB’s that would be chucked away
(b) It creates a realm of fun, new possibilities with a chain of data points accross public space and could grow into something more
(c) its pretty darn cool!
So, we’re thinking of getting involved with some of Irelands ‘hackers’ to see what can be done with old USBs’s. If you have an old USB or 2 you’d like to donate, get onto us either here or on our Facebook page below and we’ll give them an interesting new home….

And yes, I know that ‘New Uses for used USB’s’ is a great tongue twister
